Historical: Elizabeth is the daughter of Frank Tjupurrula and Mary Napanangka. Frank died when Elizabeth was an infant and she was raised by her stepfather Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula and uncle Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula. She was married to the late Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri with who she had three children Angelina, Peter and Farren.
Painting: Elizabeth began painting in1998 after her husband passed away. Elizabeth paints her father’s ( Tjupurrula) stories from the area of Kalipinpa, located approximately 400km. west of Alice Springs, north of Sandy Blight Junction. In mythological times a huge storm caused lightning to flash and the water torrent formed rockholes and creeks. Paintings depict various landforms such as sandhills, hills, soakage’s, rockholes and creeks. There are many dreamings associated with the site including water, lightning, and bush potato. A group of men and women gathered at the rockhole to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area. |
